It is Asperger not Asberger or Asburger or Aspberger

by Melissa on April 20, 2008

I see Hans Asperger’s name butchered on a daily basis.  Hans Asperger was the doctor who “discovered” Asperger’s Syndrome.  According to the OASIS website:

Asperger Syndrome or (Asperger’s Disorder) is a neurobiological disorder named for a Viennese physician, Hans Asperger, who in 1944 published a paper which described a pattern of behaviors in several young boys who had normal intelligence and language development, but who also exhibited autistic-like behaviors and marked deficiencies in social and communication skills. In spite of the publication of his paper in the 1940′s, it wasn’t until 1994 that Asperger Syndrome was added to the DSM IV and only in the past few years has AS been recognized by professionals and parents.

However, I see his name misspelled all the time.  I’m not just talking about people who are casually mentioning AS but from people who either have AS themselves, have a child with AS or are professionals that deal with AS.  This is not a matter of regional spelling, this is a person’s surname.  There is only one way to spell his surname.  There is no regional spelling of his surname.

A common joke among both Aspies and those with friends or family members with AS is “Oh no, it’s teh Ass Burgers!”  For those not joking around, please give the good Doc a little credit and spell his name right.  Thanks!  *wink*

I don’t like it when people spell Asperger Syndrome wrong either. I have been on an endeavor for quite some time to cure the world of ignorance about autism and autism spectrum disorders. One of the projects I have been working on to that effect are the Midnight In Chicago podcasts which can be found at http://www.mic.mypodcast.com . There parents can learn the SCIENCE about autism and learn what autistics and other parents say about ASDs as well.

Thanks for the comment and link Tom, I hadn’t seen the podcasts but did hear about MIC when the whole “Ransom Notes” debacle hit (I was appalled by it). I’ll have to start listening to the MIC podcasts. :)

Hey all.
I’m with a guy now named Cody who has the syndrome and I realized that, by not knowing anything about it, I didn’t know much about him, and we were planning on getting married!
So, I googled it and came upon this website.
I would like to thank everyone involved with it because it taught me more than just the facts. Having other people actually make comments and talk about their own experiences helped me to better understand the syndrome.
So thanks!
Courtnie
