More About Me...

I'm Melissa, your Mindless Mommy. I started this blog in 2007 to discuss my journey as a mom of two children on the autism spectrum.

I am also a freelance writer and a college student. In my 30s I discovered what I wanted to be when I gew up and I'm studying to be an SLP.

Debate on Corporal Punishment

If you are anti-spanking or have thoughts on the topic, please join the Center for Effective Discipline as they debate parenting ‘expert’ John Rosemond on the topic of Corporal Punishment.

Is Spanking an Acceptable Form of Discipline?

Personally, I don’t believe that spanking does anything but convince the child to be scared of the parent.  I don’t consider it effective in the least bit.  I prefer to focus on more positive discipline techniques.

    Hi Melissa:

I came across your blog today — thanks for writing about the spanking debate on Opposing Views. It looks like you have a lot of interesting information here. While we already have a question about whether autism and vaccines are linked, we’re looking to launch an ADHD question in the coming weeks. Let me know if I can send you a heads up before it is published — or if we should keep you updated on other parenting topics. In addition, let me know what parenting debates interest you — or what experts you typically listen to or recommend. Thanks for your time.

Wow!!! What a debate! You know, we rarely spank around this house. (Safety type issues that we want them to remember–not angry or quick-tempered responses.) I am so glad that you posted this here though! Regardless of what one believes in regard to spanking I do not believe it is ever an appropriate response for a child on the spectrum! They don’t connect the punishment with the crime when you’re physically disciplining them.

Thanks for the link on positive discipline approaches!!!
