If you’ve been reading my blog for awhile then you know that I’m a student. Up until a few months ago, I was pursuing my degree in Speech & Hearing Science. However, due to Alexander’s health issues I’ve decided that I don’t have the time (nor energy, honestly) to put towards the degree. I first entered college 18 years ago and I will finish so I did a little research on my University’s website and discovered that there is a degree program which is interesting to me but also one that I can finish rather quickly – Multimedia Writing & Technical Communication.
I know that a college degree is not the end-all be-all but for me, it is a goal that I set for myself as I watched my mom graduate for college when I was in high school. She was the first in her family to do so. I entered college with good intentions but I was extremely immature and by the end of the first year I’d lost my full ride academic scholarship. Hey, at least I had fun.
After a few years, I decided that I really had no clue what I wanted to study and that I was wasting money so I went to work full-time. Fast forward to 2007 and I watched my youngest sister receive her Bachelor’s degree. That lit the fire under me and I enrolled in the fall of 2007 after a 13 year break from school.
Right now I am on track to graduate in December ’09 – yes, later this year. Multimedia Writing & Technical Communication kind of falls loosely into what I’m doing now as a part-time freelance writer. This semester is a doozy though -15 credit hours. Here is my course load:
General Principles of Multimedia Writing
Principles of Technical Communication
Principles of Visual Communication
Proposal Writing
Written Communication for Managers
The Visual Comm class will come with Photoshop tutorials – something I’m looking forward to. Classes start tomorrow but being the good adult re-entry student that I am, I’ve already completed a few of this week’s assignments. Wish me luck!

Wow, your story sounds very much like mine. I started college at 18 and dropped out after 2 years b/c I didn’t know what I wanted to study and went to work f/t. I went back and got my nursing degree 10 years later. After the kids were born I’d planned (and even enrolled) in grad school to get my MSN, but the semester I was due to start was when Nick was diagnosed. Suddenly my priorities changed and I put those plans on hold. Nick is now making good progress and will start kindergarten in the fall and I’m beginning to think about finishing that degree after all!
Good luck to you! That semester line up looks tough…but fun!
