We are a book loving family and Alexander is no exception. Last week, he was having a sleepover at my parent’s house with my nephew (one year older than Alex) and Alex was sure to pack four books in his suitcase.
Today at school Alex was given the Accelerate Reader Star Test to assess his reading level. For the first part of second grade, he was limited to books that fell within the 2.4 to 3.4 range. Towards the end of the first semester, the librarian allowed him to check out some high 3s. When I picked him up from school today, the first words out of his mouth were “I can check out all the 3s, all the 4s and the early level 5s now!”
He was so absolutely excited and followed up with a “I can read 5th grade books now!” comment. Its great to see him have passion for something, especially knowing how much joy I’ve received from reading books across my lifetime. Any time I find myself stressed out, I check out a new book (that isn’t a textbook or about autism) and immerse myself in another world.

It’s a joy to see our children develop a love for books and reading, isn’t it?
Absolutely Jenn – even my little one loves books – she’ll say “I can’t read da words” but will flip through them incessantly.
Stumbled on your blog, and enjoyed hearing about your readers! How awesome. And “Amen” to loosing yourself in a good read! That is the ultimate stress buster. Wish I allowed myself more time to do that.
