Watching the Inauguration Day Festivities with the Kids

by Melissa on January 20, 2009

Alexander has been engrossed in this election since the primaries were finished and Senators John McCain and Barack Obama became the two major party candidates for President. We live in Arizona so Alexander was bombarded with election coverage nightly and couldn’t get enough. He proudly participated in Kids Voting and wore his sticker with true pride.

He tried to stay awake on election night to see who won but was just too tired so went to sleep. The first question he asked the next day was “who won?” He didn’t care which candidate won, he was just excited to be a part of it. Sometime shortly after election night, he heard that Inauguration Day was January 20. Since then he’s been focused on the date.

In late November he had a follow-up appointment with the opthamologist. The doc said to come back in January and Alexander requested January 20 for his appointment. The doctor asked why and Alexander replied “It’s the day Barack Obama becomes President.” The doc was impressed.

Yesterday, Alexander sat and watched the two-hour History Channel documentary, King, with me. He learned about MLK over the past few years and was interested in knowing more. The documentary was beautiful but raw, Alexander was surprised that dogs and water hoses were used on people.

Now here it is, January 20 – a milestone day in the history of America. We have made the decision to let Alexander go in late to school so that he can watch the swearing in ceremony and the subsequent speech live (on tv).

Whether you voted for Obama or McCain, today is a truly historic day and I am glad that I can watch history being made with my sweet snugglebun Alexander curled up next to me.
