Arizona School Closes Due to Confirmed Swine Flu Case

by Melissa on April 29, 2009

A nine-year old student of Moon Mountain Elementary school in Phoenix, Arizona was the first confirmed case of swine flu in the state. Although the child has fully recovered from the illness, the school is closing for seven days in order to help prevent the spread of the disease. Right now, I am watching a news conference featuring a physician with the Arizona Department of Health Services. The representative is encouraging parents of children that attend the elementary school to not congregate with one another during the school closing as it will defeat the purpose of the closure.

For more information on this interesting step taken by the state, read the following reports:

Are they closing the school? Is the student OK? I heard earlier that the World Health Organization upped the alert to pandemic level 5. http://www.who.int/mediacentre/news/statements/2009/h1n1_20090429/en/index.html
