Today, April 2, is the second annual World Autism Awareness Day. Last year, the United Nations’ celebrated the first and this year the festivities have been expanded. I even received an email inviting me to the party but alas, I am on the other side of the country.
For me, autism awareness is about understanding all of the different attributes that a person on the spectrum may have. I have met dozens of people on the spectrum and no two have been alike in every way. I find that a lot of people that aren’t well-versed in the autism spectrum try to pigeon-hole people as nonverbal, noninterested and noncaring.
In our house, my two spectrum kiddos show love and affection. My daughter requires a hug and a kiss before we depart ways and my son requires a hug and a kiss before bed every night.
My kids make eye contact and my daughter has a never ending smile on her face.
There are many faces of autism; it is a true spectrum of conditions and abilities of individuals on the spectrum can vary greatly.
