Planting a Jelly Bean Tree

by Melissa on April 25, 2009

Ava planted a jelly bean tree today. She took a bucket and put a bunch of baby wipes in it. She then put a jelly bean in the center of it and brought it to us. She explained that she was planting a jelly bean tree.

We called my dad and Ava explained her jelly bean tree to him. I told my dad that we hadn’t broken the bad news to Ava yet so my dad says “Ava, have you ever seen a jelly bean tree?” Ava said yes. My dad said it was candy and asked if she’d ever seen a candy tree. She said no but I saw a candy bush and it was real! She then went on to describe the neighbor’s hedge. At Christmas time, someone hung a candy cane from the bush. Ava was professing to my dad that it was REAL!

It was so cute, but we had to let her know that someone just put a candy cane on the neighbor’s bush and that candy won’t grow. She was bummed.

Edited to add a picture. She has been watering it and you can see the purplish jelly bean “juice” at the bottom.

Hi, I just posted a comment and lost it, so I’m sure this one won’t be as articulate.

Found your blog on Problogger’s forums after searching “autism.” I’m also a SAHM: My son, Mr. Busypants, is 6 and has autism (real name Alex, so we have that in common) and my daughter, Miss Chattyshoes, is almost 2 and so far neurotypical–among other things.

Not going to BlogHer but live in the Chicago area.

I’m going to subscribe to you in reader and check out your site. Stop on by when you can.
