Two years ago, we purchased Ava a 5-lb weighted blanket from Dreamcatcher. Although the general rule of thumb with weighted blankets is 10% of the person’s body weight + 1, we bought the 5-lb blanket (that math said a 4-lb blanket was ideal). Fast forward two years and about 20 washes later, the blanket is in fantastic condition – just a little faded.
So tonight, after Ava had been lying in bed for about 5 minutes she told me “Mom, I need a heavier blanket.” This statement was profound on so many levels (at least to me). It was an insightful statement. She understands her needs and communicated them verbally. She understands that blankets can be made heavier.
So I decided to visit the Dreamcatcher website and in honor of Autism Awareness Month, they are having a 10% off sales. I also noticed that they now offer organic fabrics. I am all over that one!
I’m waiting to hear back on fabric choices but I think we’re going to go with a 7-lb blanket. She is only about 38 lbs now but that 10% + 1 is her current blanket weight and it just isn’t cutting it. For safety reasons, a child should always be able to remove the blanket themselves. This shouldn’t be a problem with a 7-lb blanket as she carries that 5-lb blanket all over the house. If she wants to lie down and watch a movie with us, she’ll scoop up that twin-sized 5-lb blanket and carry it into the living room. I don’t think that extra two pounds will be a safety issue.
