My semester is over and so I need to catch up on the goings on in the Mindless Mommy household. On May 2, Alexander ran has very first 5K (3.1 miles) – The Night Run for the Arts. Get this, he did it in 36 minutes and 40 seconds! The event is something that our family has participated in for years – there is live music, the run, food, beverages, adult beverages, etc – it is at night so the weather isn’t an issue.
My dad took the double stroller so Ava could ride along and Alex could take a break if he needed to. Well, Alexander never needed a break – he ran the entire race. Ava did get out several times to run too. Both of them crossed the finish line on foot but since I hadn’t expected them to be back so soon, I just have blurry pictures of the back of them as they rounded the final corner. My sister, nephews, and my dad all ran it as well.
Although he was exhausted after the run, he spent the next hour to hour and a half running around with Ava as well as my nephews. So he ran a 5K and then ran for another hour. After the race, we went around to get his card stamped so that he could enter the drawing. Prior to the start of the race, I told him about some of the prices he could win – a solar hot water heater, an electric lawnmower, and a limo ride. He interjected “I don’t want to win the limo ride!” Well out of about 1,000 runners, guess who won the limo ride? Yup – Alex! LOL
We are going to use it in August for his 8th birthday and pick him up from school, then go pick up my nephews, and go out for a birthday party. He’ll definitely have a blast.
In other Alex news, he took fourth place in his school’s spelling bee. He was in the math bee last month but only made it through a few rounds. The math bee was kind of silly, in my opinion. Two kids went head-to-head and whomever blurted out the correct answer first, got to progress. The thing is, this was just math facts up to 9+9 – hellooooo, this was the third quarter of his second grade year. 9+9 was a 1st grade thing for him.
Anyhow, fast forward to the spelling bee. He went out in the 8th round by missing the word “receive” – he spelled it “recive” – he was so upset when he lost. He came and sat on my lap and embedded his elbow into my diaphragm. I knew he was upset so tried to comfort him as best as I could. Lucky for him, all but three of the students went out that round and they have four trophies. So Alexander, and the other second graders that went out that round, were called back to the stage to do a spell-off for fourth grade. Alexander was the victor and his despair over not winning a trophy quickly disappeared.
