Mindless Mommy Prepares to Head to Chicago for BlogHer ’09

by Melissa on July 20, 2009

In about 36 hours, I will be heading to the airport to visit Chicago for the first time. I’ll be attending BlogHer Business on Thursday and then BlogHer ’09 on Friday and Saturday. I registered for these events way back in January and have been excited since that time. Now I’m excited AND nervous. I decided to write about my reasons for being nervous to help make me feel a bit better about the trip.

Nervous Reason #1 – Leaving the kids for four nights
The longest I’ve been away from the kids is three nights, just under 72 hours total. I’ll be departing bright and early Wednesday morning and returning late-morning on Sunday.

Nervous Reason #2 – Alexander’s seizures/seizure medication
Alexander’s seizures returned with a vengeance after a recent trip to Greer, Arizona (elevation 8,500 feet). Since we’ve returned, his seizures have slowed down but we still don’t have seizure control. His medicine was increased and I found out today that he’s at max blood level for his weight. He’s acting overmedicated, though. So now the neurologist has suggested adding 12.5 mg of vitamin B6 3x/day after meals to see if that decreases the sleepiness/grogginess. However, I’m going to be gone so daddy is going to have to do a keen job of observing Alexander’s moods.

Nervous Reason #3 – The social side of things
Okay, I’m a super chatty person. However, I’m shy. I know that sounds odd but I get nervous in social situations and instead of not talking, I talk too much and usually too fast. I’m going to a conference with about 1,500 other (mostly women) bloggers. I am going to have to socialize as the purpose for my attending is to network…networking = conversing. Yikes! I figure I have a few groups of bloggers that I can connect with including mommy bloggers and eco-bloggers.

Nervous Reason #4 – The fashion side of things
I had no clue that planning for what to wear to BlogHer would end up being as stressful as it was. I’m a t-shirt and jeans type of gal but I love shoes and purses. So once I realized that there are cocktail parties, etc I knew I had to go shopping. Being the shoe lover that I am, I found shoes first and then chose outfits to match the shoes.

Here are the shoes that will be gracing my feet during the parties (I will be in comfy shoes during the main conference day):

L.A.M.B. Ranger Pumps – 4.5″ heel (I’m 5’7″)

Donald J. Pliner Gerda – 4″ heel

Michael Kors Nash – 4″ heel

So there it is, four reasons why I’m nervous about BlogHer. I’ll be there though. If you’re going, follow me on Twitter @MommyMellie so that we can meet up!

Thanks! I have super comfy flats for daytime and then if (when) my feet give out in the evening.

Have an awesome time at the conference. By the time I heard about it, it was sold out, which is such a bummer because I’m 45 minutes from Chicago.

The weather is kind of unpredicatable here right now. It’s been a pretty chilly summer (low 70s.) Just chilly enough that the kiddos can’t swim. Bring a sweater, because the A/C is bound to freeze you out.

Oh, and we are getting a sufficient amount of humidity, so bring hair spray if your hair frizzes out.

Have an amazing time!!!!!

Thanks for the info on the weather Jeannie. My hair tends to get frizzy so I have bought some product to address that issue hehe.

Brooke – thanks, I was hoping I’d get some rest during the conference but now I’m not so sure.
