PHX to SLC – Yellowstone National Park Road Trip – Summer 2013

On Monday, June 17 the kids and I woke up at 4:30 am, wished my husband a happy birthday and then all four of us hopped in the truck (complete with a big bag of snacks to limit stops) and set off for the first day of an eight-day Yellowstone road trip. Our end goal for day one was Layton, Utah, just a bit north of Salt Lake City. By the end of the day we would have traveled over 700 miles and my kids would be road warriors!

A few hours after we started our journey in Chandler, Arizona we crossed the huge suspension bridge over the Colorado River into Nevada. The last time I drove to Las Vegas, construction on the bridge had just begun so travelers still drove over the Hoover Dam. Although it was a hot morning, already over 95 degrees at 10:00 am, we parked and walked out onto the bridge to look down at the river and the dam.

It was a long way down and so we made it a quick trip – not one of the four of us is fond of heights. The kids thought it was cool, and so did I, but with the highway traffic zooming by just a few feet away, we weren’t in the mood to linger.

After walking back to the truck I decided to take Dave and the kids over the Hoover Dam – thankfully foot-traffic cooperated and the entire side trip took about an hour. After we left Hoover Dam we stopped off for Dave’s birthday lunch at P.F. Chang’s in Las Vegas.

While Dave and Alex were in the restroom washing up, Ava grabbed the wine menu and began to study it seriously. I managed to grab my phone and get a quick picture before she realized that she had the wine menu. She giggled and said, “Oh, this is wine!” before grabbing the correct menu. Future wine connoisseur, perhaps?

Once the birthday lunch was over we all loaded up the truck and set out for Layton, Utah. We didn’t arrive until about 9:00 pm that night and since we had a 6:00 am leave time scheduled for Tuesday, everyone quickly showered and hopped in bed. Tuesday morning would be our first day in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and we couldn’t wait!
